Your Nighttime Skincare Routine Is More Important Than You Think
We all remember the fairytale story of Sleeping Beauty, the princess who slept for 100 years only to be awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince – but today, we’re not going to focus on the prince. Take a moment to think of how gorgeous Sleeping Beauty was with her long, flowing hair and perfectly porcelain skin-not even a wrinkle or fine line in sight. That glowing skin didn’t happen by chance – it happened because she was very well rested. Now, I’m not saying you need to go into a deep sleep for 100 years to keep your skin looking refreshed and youthful, but getting enough quality sleep each night is a key factor in waking up with clear, radiant skin. Plus, no one looks cute with bags under their eyes (even if they’re Chanel.)
So why is sleep so important anyways, and what exactly is its correlation to your skin’s health?
Your body actually repairs and recharges itself during your sleep cycle, including your skin. While your skin is in recovery mode, it’s eliminating toxins, regenerating cells and producing more collagen. When you deprive yourself of quality sleep, your body produces more of the stress hormone, cortisol, which can contribute to inflamed, puffy and dull looking skin. So why not give your skin the proper tools it needs to repair itself over night? The first step is getting enough quality sleep (7-9 hours is recommended), and the second step is nourishing your skin with the proper products to aid in the recovery process. Without them, our skin won’t be reaching its full potential and reaping all the benefits- it’s called beauty sleep for a reason!
What products should I be using for my nighttime skin routine?
It’s very important to recognize that everyone’s skin is different, and therefore we should not all be using the same products. Depending on your skin type and any problem areas you’re trying to improve, certain products will accelerate the repairing process. Check out a few we’ve highlighted below for your nighttime skincare routine:
If You Have Dry Skin
If you have dry skin, having a nighttime routine is especially important because our skin loses moisture while we sleep. Start with a gentle, soothing cleanser. Cream or oil based cleansers are your friend! Above all – you want to restore moisture to skin. Here are some great products that will give you that hydration boost you need:
SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier
This serum will amplify your current hyaluronic acid levels by 30% (hello hydration), creating smoother, plumper and firmer skin.
Intoxicated Cosmetics Snail Venom Serum
Why snails? Snail mucin (a.k.a the excretion from a snail) contains glycolic acid which helps to produce collagen, elastin, and even smooths the surface layer. Intoxicated Cosmetics uses a synthetic version of this mucin. Another key ingredient in this this multi-functional serum is hyadisine- an active ingredient that can increase skin moisture by over 20% in just 24 hours.
If You Have Oily/problematic Skin
If you suffer from breakouts and blemishes, we all know there is nothing more annoying than waking up with a fresh little guy staring angrily back at you in the mirror. Making sure your face is completely clean of makeup, impurities, oil and dirt, is key here – as to not aggravate and clog your pores even more! (And, no picking!)
SkinCeuticals LHA Cleansing Gel
This exfoliating gel cleanser will decongest pores, smooth your skin texture, remove excess oil and brighten your skin all at once. Follow with a corrective product or a moisturizer.
SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense
This oil-free serum containing salicylic acid reduces the formation of acne and improves the appearance of blotchiness and blemishes. Can be used to spot treat as well!
If You Have Sensitive Skin
Keep your routine simple but effective! A gentle cleanser and moisturizer free of fragrance or dyes is crucial.
SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore
This is one of our favorite products for any skin type, even sensitive skin. Its ceramides and fatty acids replenish your skin lipids and nourish any dry areas whether you’re dealing with rough patches or redness.
If You have Aging Skin
Serums and moisturizers are your best friends! Certain products can help drastically improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dry or sagging skin.
SkinCeuticals Resveratrol BE
This nighttime face serum is loaded with antioxidants that will reduce free radicals, while simultaneously improving the appearance of skin firmness and radiance.
Intoxicated Cosmetics Snake Venom Serum
This serum contains SYN®-AKE a biomimetic peptide that targets wrinkles, enhancing the elasticity of the skin leaving you with a firmer and more youthful complexion.
For All Skin Types
Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight
This overnight cream is suitable for all skin types. With a free acid value of 10% glycolic acid this cream works to exfoliate the skin and promote cell turnover leaving you with radiant, glowing skin.
SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex
Do yourself a favor and invest in an eye cream. The skin around your eyes is 10x thinner than the surrounding skin and thus needs to be treated differently. This anti-wrinkle eye cream fights the appearance of crow’s feet, dark circles and puffiness.
Whenever applying serums, night creams or moisurizers, always remember to apply from the thinnest consistency to the thickest to make sure your skin is absorbing all the good stuff! Now get some rest pretties – it’s time to get the best skin of your life!
